About: eSIM

Overview

eSIMs make activating your Freedom service easier - instead of inserting a physical SIM card into your phone, an eSIM is already built in.

Since eSIMs are built into the phones themselves, they take up less space than a traditional removable SIM slot, which means that it's easier for manufacturers to design waterproof phones, or phones with bigger batteries.

With eSIM you can even use two phone numbers on your phone at the same time - business and personal.

eSIM Eligibility

eSIMs are available to new and existing customers. To activate new service on an eSIM, get started online or visit us in-store. If you already have Freedom service and want to convert your service from a physical SIM card to an eSIM, you’ll need an eSIM compatible phone. Use our device compatibility tool to confirm if your phone is eSIM compatible or check out our latest phones to get an eSIM compatible Freedom phone.

eSIM QR codes are available once per billing cycle but you can transfer your existing eSIM up to 3 times per billing cycle using On-Device transfer. You'll find more information about On-Device eSIM transfers, including eligibility, below.

Important: eSIM changes can only be made by Account Holders and Authorized Users.

Setting up an eSIM

Before you begin, we recommend the following these steps:

  1. Check eSIM device compatibility. Make sure your phone supports eSIM and has the latest software updates. Use our device compatibility tool to confirm eSIM compatibility.

  2. Deregister/Disable iMessage or RCS. If you're transferring (porting) your number to Freedom Mobile, or moving between iPhone and Android, we recommend that you deregister iMessage or disable RCS on your old phone. Wait until after the transfer is complete to set up iMessage or RCS on your new phone.

You’ll find steps on how to complete this below:

Deregister iMessage on your old iPhone.
Disable RCS on your old Android device.

  3. Keep your previous service active. If you are transferring your number from another carrier, keep your service active and your old phone turned on, so you can receive the SMS needed to approve the transfer. If you're bringing your own phone to Freedom, you’ll need to wait until the transfer is authorized before setting up your eSIM.

  4. Connect to Wi-Fi. Ensure you have access to a stable Wi-Fi connection.

Important: After setting up your eSIM, it may take up to 15 minutes for your service to activate.

We offer three options to set up your eSIM:

eSIM using a QR Code

If youre bringing your own phone to Freedom, your QR code will be available on the confirmation page during activation. If you couldnt scan it during activation or you're an existing customer getting an eSIM, you can find your QR code in My Account. Youll find detailed steps below.

We recommend using a desktop or other secondary device to log in to My Account rather than your phone. You’ll need your phone number and the temporary PIN that was sent to you by text message and email to login. Having trouble logging in? Learn how to reset you My Account PIN.

Once logged into My Account, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the correct phone number from the available options in the My Phone Number dropdown.

  2. Navigate to the Plan & Device section.

  3. Click Manage SIM/eSIM.

  4. If you previously set up an eSIM select the option to View Current eSIM and skip to step 7. If not, select the eSIM option and follow the steps below.

  5. Enter the IMEI of your eSIM phone and click Check Compatibility.

  6. Accept the transfer of service to your new eSIM. By accepting, your current SIM will become inactive. Click Confirm & Change SIM to proceed.

  7. Scan the QR Code - the steps to scan the QR code will vary based on the phone you are using. You will also need an internet connection on your eSIM compatible phone to complete this step.

Disclaimer: Your QR code is valid for one phone only and cannot be reused on additional phones. Freedom Mobile is not responsible for lost or stolen eSIM QR codes. Please keep a copy for your records. If you require a new eSIM or an additional printed QR code, charges may apply. eSIM is only supported on compatible phones that have been certified with Freedom Mobile and our manufacturer partners. eSIM QR codes may not activate on unsupported phones.

About Dual SIM

Dual SIM is cellular technology that allows phones with multiple SIM cards to manage two cellular services. If your device has an eSIM and Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) software support, you can use two phone numbers on one phone. To confirm if a phone has eSIM or DSDS support, please check our device compatibility tool.

If a number associated to one SIM card is on a call, incoming calls on the other number will go to Voicemail. Likewise, only one number at a time can use cellular data. If one of the plans associated to a number is voice-only, your device may have a setting to enable it to automatically switch to the other line for data.

If you're using multiple phone numbers on one device, you can manage your profiles in your device settings. Refer to your device manufacturer's user guide for detailed steps on how to do this:
