About: eSIM

Overview

eSIM is short for embedded SIM and is a tiny, programmable (and re-writable) digital SIM card that is built into a phone.

Instead of inserting a physical SIM card into your phone, you set up your eSIM by scanning a unique QR code, which represents your phone number and Freedom Mobile service.

With eSIM, you can even use two phone numbers on your device at the same time - business and personal.

Disclaimer: Your QR code is valid for one phone only and cannot be reused on additional phones. Freedom Mobile is not responsible for lost or stolen eSIM QR codes. Please keep a copy for your records. If you require a new eSIM or an additional printed QR code, charges may apply. eSIM is only supported on compatible phones that have been certified with Freedom Mobile and our manufacturer partners. eSIM QR codes may activate on unsupported phones.

Advantages of eSIM

eSIM makes activating your Freedom service that much easier - just scan the QR Code and off you go!

The eSIM can also accommodate multiple phone numbers, allowing you to add, delete and configure your services right from your phone’s settings, instead of physically removing and swapping a regular SIM. Some eSIM-compatible phones can store two phone numbers on one phone (e.g. business line and personal line).

Since eSIMs are built into the phones themselves, they take up less space than a traditional removable SIM slot, which means that it's easier for manufacturers to design waterproof phones, or phones with bigger batteries.

eSIM technology will also enable greater connectivity to other phones in the future.

Setting up an eSIM

If you would like to complete setting up an eSIM you purchased online, or if you’re an existing customer ready to make the switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM, you’ll find all the information to set up your Freedom eSIM below.

Before getting started we recommend that you:

  1. Make sure your phone is compatible with eSIM, with fully up-to-date software. You’ll find information about eSIM compatibility in our device compatibility tool.

  2. Use a desktop or other secondary device to log in to My Account rather than your phone.

Important: If you are porting your number from another carrier, please ensure your previous service remains active so you can receive the SMS required to approve the port-out request. We recommend waiting until your port request is complete before setting up your eSIM.

About Dual SIM

Dual SIM is cellular technology that allows phones with multiple SIM cards to manage two cellular services. If your device has an eSIM and Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) software support, you can use two phone numbers on one phone. To confirm if a phone has eSIM or DSDS support, please check our device compatibility tool.

If a number associated to one SIM card is on a call, incoming calls on the other number will go to Voicemail. Likewise, only one number at a time can use cellular data. If one of the plans associated to a number is voice-only, your device may have a setting to enable it to automatically switch to the other line for data.

If you're using multiple phone numbers on one device, you can manage your profiles in your device settings. Refer to your device manufacturer's user guide for detailed steps on how to do this:
