How To: Troubleshoot Wi-Fi Interference with your Home Internet

Overview

Wi Fi lets your devices connect to the internet wirelessly through your router.

Your connection quality depends on the strength of the signal between the router and your devices. Walls, objects, and nearby electronics can interfere with that signal and affect performance.

Range and Signal Strength

Wi-Fi works best when there’s a clear path between your router and your device. You may notice weaker signal or slower speeds if:

  • You’re far from the router.

  • There are walls or floors between your device and the router.

  • Your device is in a closed or obstructed space.

For better performance, try to stay within a reasonable distance of your router or add access points to extend coverage. When available, using the 5 GHz connection can also provide faster speeds at shorter range.

Common Causes of Interference

Physical objects in your home can weaken or block your Wi-Fi signal. Common sources include:

  • Thick walls made of brick, concrete, or stone.

  • Metal objects or structures.

  • Large furniture or appliances.

  • Glass surfaces such as mirrors or windows

To help reduce interference:

  • Place your router in a central, open location

  • Keep it away from walls and large objects

  • Avoid placing it inside cabinets or behind furniture

Device and Network Interference

Other devices and nearby networks can also affect your Wi-Fi signal, especially on the 2.4 GHz frequency. This can include:

  • Nearby Wi-Fi networks

  • Bluetooth devices

  • Cordless phones or baby monitors

  • Microwaves and large household appliances

  • Wireless cameras or security systems

How to Improve Your Wi-Fi

To help improve your connection, you can try:

  • Restarting your modem and router

  • Moving your router to a more open, central location

  • Keeping your router elevated, such as on a shelf or table

  • Avoiding placement near TVs, electronics, or appliances

  • Disconnecting devices you’re not actively using

  • Using the 5 GHz connection when available

  • Adding an additional eero to extend coverage and better distribute connected devices

Important: Your eero router will also automatically adjust channels over time to help reduce interference and improve performance.
