About: eSIM

Overview

eSIMs make activating your Freedom service easier - instead of inserting a physical SIM card into your phone, an eSIM is already built in.

Since eSIMs are built into the phones themselves, they take up less space than a traditional removable SIM slot, which means that it's easier for manufacturers to design waterproof phones, or phones with bigger batteries.

With eSIM you can even use two phone numbers on your phone at the same time - business and personal.

eSIM Eligibility

eSIMs are available to new and existing customers. To activate new service on an eSIM, get started online or visit us in-store. If you already have Freedom service and want to convert your service from a physical SIM card to an eSIM, you’ll need an eSIM compatible phone. Use our device compatibility tool to confirm if your phone is eSIM compatible or check out our latest phones to get an eSIM compatible Freedom phone.

eSIM QR codes are available once per billing cycle but you can transfer your existing eSIM up to 3 times per billing cycle using on-device transfer. You'll find more information about on-device eSIM transfers, including eligibility, below.

Important: eSIM changes can only be made by Account Holders and Authorized Users.

Setting up an eSIM

Before getting started, we recommend the following:

  1. Make sure your phone is compatible with eSIM, with fully up-to-date software. Check our device compatibility tool to confirm your phone can use an eSIM.

  2. Make sure you have access to a Wi-Fi connection.

  3. If you are porting your number from another carrier, we recommend waiting until your port request is complete before setting up your eSIM. Please ensure your service with the other carrier remains active so you can receive the SMS required to approve the port-out request.

  4. Once your eSIM is setup, it may take up to 15 minutes for your Freedom service to activate.

We offer two options to set up your eSIM:

Accessing your eSIM QR Code in My Account

We recommend using a desktop or other secondary device to log in to My Account rather than your phone. Once logged into My Account, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the correct phone number from the available options in the My Phone Number dropdown.

  2. Navigate to the Plan & Device section.

  3. Click Manage SIM/eSIM.

  4. Select eSIM.

  5. Enter the IMEI of your eSIM phone and click Check Compatibility.

  6. Accept the transfer of service to your new eSIM. By accepting, your current SIM will become inactive. Click Confirm & Change SIM to proceed.

  7. Scan the QR Code - the steps to scan the QR code will vary based on the phone you are using. You will also need an internet connection on your eSIM compatible phone to complete this step.

Disclaimer: Your QR code is valid for one phone only and cannot be reused on additional phones. Freedom Mobile is not responsible for lost or stolen eSIM QR codes. Please keep a copy for your records. If you require a new eSIM or an additional printed QR code, charges may apply. eSIM is only supported on compatible phones that have been certified with Freedom Mobile and our manufacturer partners. eSIM QR codes may not activate on unsupported phones.

eSIM on iPhone

If you are transferring your eSIM from a Freedom iPhone to another Freedom iPhone, you can use Quick Transfer to set up your eSIM. Your old phone must be an iPhone 11 or newer and both phones must be running iOS 16.2 or later.

About Dual SIM

Dual SIM is cellular technology that allows phones with multiple SIM cards to manage two cellular services. If your device has an eSIM and Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) software support, you can use two phone numbers on one phone. To confirm if a phone has eSIM or DSDS support, please check our device compatibility tool.

If a number associated to one SIM card is on a call, incoming calls on the other number will go to Voicemail. Likewise, only one number at a time can use cellular data. If one of the plans associated to a number is voice-only, your device may have a setting to enable it to automatically switch to the other line for data.

If you're using multiple phone numbers on one device, you can manage your profiles in your device settings. Refer to your device manufacturer's user guide for detailed steps on how to do this:
